The spring term of 2021 at the City College of New York was a challenging experience where all courses have been remote learning. Writing for the Humanities and Arts English 21001 was one of my ideal courses, where I develop diversity strategies that I can apply for my future classes. Taking this course has aided me in improving my literature and learn how to write different genres, such as Poem, Interview, Opinion Edited Essay, and Grant Proposal Project. Each writing piece helped me improve my writing skills and develop new strategies that work for me.
The first significant assignment I did for this class was the Interview assignment. To accomplish this assignment required several steps. First, we wrote a poem subject to “Where I’m From,” which assist my peer and me understand each other further. Next, we start to develop questions regarding a specific event in our life that shapes who we are today. The other assignment that comes together to progress this assignment further is “The Danger of a Single Story,” where we write a short response concerning our thought after reading this story. Through the Interview, the assignment has helped me build a foundation for coming up with questions with my interviewee and improving my communication skill to apply for my future career Interview.
The next assignment is the OP-Ed Essay. This assignment was one of my favorite pieces where I can pick a topic that I’m interested in and matter for today’s people, which was the subject of the value of having mental health services for the kids. First, I start with a free-write of what Idea I have for the chosen subject, the problem, and questions. Doing this part has guided me to start my research more manageable on acknowledging what source I’m looking for. The following part required to complete is writing an Annotated Bibliography, summarizing the idea of the source, how I can apply it to my essay, and evaluate the text. After having the subject, thesis, and sources for the essay, I started my draft. The drafting process has helped me outline what I want to include in my essay and where to apply my citation, and getting feedback from the professor has assisted me to better my final essay on knowing what to change and improve. Through this assignment, I learned how to do research at the CCNY library and improve my writing on editing my paper.
The last assignment is the Grant Proposal Project. It’s one of the most challenging assignments for me throughout the semester. It is required to work as a group and come up with a topic together. To be a success, first, we came with a group agreement on how we will work together and complete this project. This assignment has several parts, such as the Gantt chart, abstract/problem statement, budget, and project narrative. As a group, we divided each section up, and each person works on their part. For bettering our work, each of us did research to understand our picking topic and the problem to further our project. During the whole project, I build a foundation for writing a grant proposal, learned to have better time management to work as a group, and supporting each other to complete the project.
Conclusively, all of these particular assignments have assisted me in growing a better writer on learning different structural formats and genres. Through this experience, it would implement for my future academy use. Also, the skill that I developed can assist me in bettering success later working as a group.
